Mōwai is more than just our name, it’s our feeling! Inspired by the Māori word mōwai, which speaks to calmness and a sense of sheltered comfort, it reflects how we believe coffee should make you feel: grounded, relaxed, and at home.

That sense of calm, balance and connection inspires everything we do. From our roots in the craft of coffee roasting to the way we build relationships with coffee growers, customers, and our community, we’re dedicated to create something warm, steady, and unforgettable!

In 2017, in the historic town of Lewes, two siblings and their beloved mother began a coffee journey together. What started as a shared dream rooted in hospitality, craftsmanship and a deep respect for quality became Carafe Coffee Roasters. Built by family hands, shaped by long hours and guided by a simple belief that coffee should be treated with care, Carafe quickly earned its place as a destination for speciality coffee.

It was never just a business, it was a commitment to each other, to our community, and to do things properly.

Founded on the success of Carafe in Lewes, our journey is rooted in nearly a decade of speciality coffee expertise. As an SCA (Speciality Coffee Association) accredited coffee roaster, our founder has built a reputation for producing meticulously developed roast profiles that honour origin character while delivering exceptional clarity and balance.

Today, Mōwai builds on that foundation bringing ethical, high-end, small-batch speciality coffee directly to your home!
